When Death Occurs

We are available 24 hours a day 7 days week. The most important thing, in the event of a passing, is someone calls Cremation Society of Illinois at 800-622-8358.

“What to do” in the event of a passing at the following locations


At home, deceased was under hospice care: Call hospice immediately following the passing. A hospice nurse will come to your home to make a pronouncement. After they have arrived, they will call us and we will transfer your loved one into our care. We usually arrive within 1 ½ - 2 hours.

At home, deceased was not receiving hospice care: Call 911. They will investigate the scene. Upon determining that the Medical Examiner’s office need not become involved, the police or paramedics will call us or allow you to call us to transfer your loved one to one of our Cremation Society of Illinois locations.

In a hospital: Call us immediately after the passing. We may not be able to take custody of the deceased until after a doctor has signed a death certificate (which is usually the next business day but could also be the duration of a weekend plus any holidays). Do not rely on the hospital to call Cremation Society of Illinois.

In a nursing home, hospice facility or assisted living facility: call us and we will make the transfer within 1 ½- 2 hours. If you are waiting for a family member to arrive and he/she is traveling some distance or is stuck in traffic, it is recommended that you call us after that person has arrived. Bear in mind that nursing homes do not have morgue facilities and that it is not recommended the deceased remain there any longer than 4 hours.

Please note, we cannot move forward with cremation or burial until all authorizations have been completed and signed by the Next of Kin or Power of Attorney for healthcare. We are always available to assist with this process.
